Bordighera

Bordighera (Burdigéa or Bordighëa in Liguria) is an Italian city of 10,727 inhabitants in the province of Imperia in Liguria. It is the southernmost town in Liguria (the southernmost point of the town is the head Sant´Ampelio). Bordighera is located on the coast of the Ligurian Riviera, located on the head Sant´Ampelio about 15 km from the border with France, at the foot of the Maritime Alps. It is about 36 km from Imperia. The picturesque village of Sasso perched on the hill bordigotta. The mountains to the sea cause in the presence of northerly winds (a phenomenon that occurs during the winter) favonico an effect that makes the cold weather very mild (the average daily temperature in January is coming to +10 ° C) and, during the summer, fresh and lively sea breezes temper the heat, which, however, is rarely excessive (daily in July and August of about +24 ° C). The city was awarded in 2007 the Blue Flag for the quality of its beaches. The port is the last port of call for tourist boats before the border with France. The historic center has kept Bordighera still the old fortified village built with irregular pentagonal shape and surrounded by massive walls of the late Middle Ages, later strengthened in the sixteenth century. To access the old town had to use three ports, the Porta del Capo, Porta Soprana and Porta Sottana. That “Soprana“, also called the Magdalene, is located to the east of the village and was opened in 1780. To the west the “Sottana“ was built in 1470 and later rebuilt in the Baroque period with the above coat of arms of Genoa San Giorgio. The old town is crossed by a dense network of streets and squares, the classical scheme of Ligurian villages, distributed adjacent to the two main roads: the Via Long and Straight Street. The village of Sasso was an ancient village founded, according to some local historical sources, by the inhabitants of the nearby Taggia on a platform of rock placed at 219 meters above sea level. The village consists mainly tower-houses, surrounded by olive trees and palm trees, and surrounded by the remains of a wall built to defend the village. In 1686 he distinguished himself Sasso, as well as other towns and villages close to the rebellion against Ventimiglia which led to the establishment of the Magnificent Community of Eight Places (formed from the nuclei of Bordighera, Borghetto San Nicolò, Sasso, Vallebona, Camporosso, Vallecrosia, San Biagio and Soldano). The origins of Borghetto San Nicolò, today a suburb of Bordighera, but separate municipality until the twenties of the twentieth century, are certainly front eleventh century, which dates back to its first mention in the archive documents. It was the parish church of San Nicolò Borghetto, which still exists, on 2 September 1470 met the families who founded Bordighera. Bordighera is located along the Provincial Road 1 (formerly Highway) Aurelia. It is also minutes away with its own motorway exit the A10 motorway. It is served by line trolleybus Sanremo - Ventimiglia. Bordighera has a railway station on the rail line Ventimiglia - Genoa in the local section between Savona and Ventimiglia. http://www.bordighera.it/international/english
